White Town
Cobbled streets, colonial bungalows in mustard yellow and white, and cafes that spill onto the pavement — this is the Pondicherry most travellers come to see.
White Town, also known as the French Quarter, is Pondicherry's oldest and most photographed neighbourhood. Laid out on a grid by French colonists, its streets are lined with restored colonial villas, many now home to boutique cafes, galleries, and guesthouses.
It sits right along Promenade Beach, so a morning walk here easily runs from heritage architecture into a seaside stroll. Rue Romain Rolland, Rue Suffren, and the streets around the French Institute are the best places to wander without a fixed plan.
Best experienced slowly — on foot, ideally early morning or just before sunset, when the light on the painted walls is at its best.
