Why Auroville deserves more than a day trip

The typical Auroville visit goes like this: drive over from Pondicherry, view the Matrimandir from the designated viewing point, buy something from the boutique, and drive back. It's a fine afternoon. It's also not really Auroville.

The township runs on a rhythm that only shows itself once the day-trippers have left — quiet forest roads best explored by bicycle, community cafes that keep unhurried hours, and a general pace that rewards staying rather than passing through.

If your schedule allows it, base yourself nearby for at least one full day. Cycle the red-earth roads between settlements in the early morning before the heat sets in. Visit the Matrimandir viewing point at a quieter hour. Eat at the Auroville Bakery more than once.
